Norton Green Tip

To the west of the A1(m) and bordered on two sides by Chadwell Road and Dyes Lane is the former Stevenage Development Corporation Tip. This tip was mainly used for dumping topsoil during the development of the town. Left relatively undisturbed in the 1970s and early 1980s, apart from unofficial motor bike scrambling, the tip has a variety of habitats including areas of scrub, open stony ground and small pools. Possibly because of its position on the west side of the Stevenage-Hitchin Gap, and being 105 metres above sea level, the tip is of attraction to spring migrants, notably Wheatears. It was also the breeding site for Little Ringed Plovers until off road vehicle driving, and the dumping of spoil from the Roaring Meg development in the early 1990s forced their abandonment of the site. Despite further ground works at the site by the Commission for the New Towns the site remains attractive to migrants.
